One of the most popular celebrations in Jewish culture is the bar or bat mitzvah. The term ‘bar mitzvah’ refers to a Jewish religious custom where young boys who turn 13 years begin to be held responsible for the Jewish religion. During the ceremony, the boy will traditionally read from the Torah at synagogue, while everyone wears kippas, the traditional Jewish skull cap. Girls celebrate bat mitzvahs when they turn 12 years old. At this age, they are believed to be no longer children and can be entrusted with responsibilities including learning the Torah and practicing Jewish law and customs.
